How it works

Each value is converted to a base unit (metres, kilograms, litres or metres per second) and then into the unit you want. Temperature uses formulas instead of a simple ratio:

°F = °C × 9 ÷ 5 + 32   K = °C + 273.15

Worked example

A US recipe says 350 °F. (350 − 32) × 5 ÷ 9 = 176.7 °C, so set the oven to about 180 °C (160 °C fan-forced).

Someone's 6 ft tall: 6 × 0.3048 = 1.83 m.

Common questions

Why is an Australian tablespoon different?

An Australian tablespoon is 20 mL, while US and UK tablespoons are about 15 mL. It matters in baking – if a recipe is from overseas, check which one it means.
