Electricity cost calculator

How much does that heater, air con or gaming PC really cost to run? Pick an appliance or type its wattage.

Per day$0
Per hour$0
Per week$0
Per month$0
Per year$0
Energy per day0 kWh

The formula

cost = watts ÷ 1,000 × hours × price per kWh

Worked example

A 2,000 W fan heater for 4 hours a day at 35c/kWh: 2 kW × 4 h = 8 kWh, and 8 × $0.35 = $2.80 a day. That's $19.60 a week, or $252 over a 90-day winter.

Common questions

How do I find an appliance's wattage?

Check the label or compliance plate on the back or base, or the manual. It's shown in watts (W) or kilowatts (kW). For things that cycle on and off, like fridges, the Energy Rating label's kWh per year is more accurate.

What's a typical electricity price in Australia?

Most households pay roughly 25c to 45c per kWh, depending on state, retailer and plan. Your bill shows your exact usage rate. We default to 35c.

Why do heaters and dryers cost so much?

Anything that makes heat draws a lot of power, often 1,500 to 2,400 W. A 2,000 W heater running 5 hours uses 10 kWh, about $3.50 a day at 35c.

Does this include the supply charge?

No. The daily supply charge is a fixed fee you pay regardless of usage, so it isn't part of any single appliance's running cost.
